The only ensemble in Latin America devoted to the research and performance of European Romani music, with a special focus on the traditional songs of the Vlax Roma of Hungary.

Founded in 2017 in Porto Alegre, Brazil, the ensemble was established and is directed by musicologist and violinist Ivan Fritzen Andrade, who has been researching the Romani cultures of Central and Eastern Europe since 2008. Today, the group is based in São Paulo, Brazil.

Joined by musicians and researchers Oscar Giovanni Martinez and Caetano Maschio Santos, the group’s activities encompass concerts, lectures, and educational programs designed to foster deeper cultural understanding of the Romani people through music. Its artistic practice is grounded in rigorous scholarship spanning linguistics, history, and the social sciences.

Baxtale’s performances are distinguished by the integration of traditional songs with curated insights into historiography, musicology, linguistics, and anthropology. This pedagogical approach highlights the richness of Romani cultural traditions while contributing to the fight against the ethnic and racial prejudice historically directed toward this minority community.
