Baxtale! – Romani Music Research Group

Baxtale! is an ensemble and research platform dedicated to Romani musical traditions across Europe, with particular attention to the repertoires of the Hungarian Vlax Roma and to the cultural dynamics of Central and Eastern Europe.

Founded in Brazil in 2017 by musicologist and violinist Ivan Fritzen Andrade, the project brings together performance, artistic research, documentary investigation, and cultural education. Since 2008, Ivan has been engaged in the study of European Romani cultures, developing a trajectory that integrates musical practice, ethnomusicology, linguistics, history, and the social sciences.

Currently based in São Paulo, Baxtale! is formed by musicians and researchers who develop concerts, lectures, educational programmes, and curatorial initiatives dedicated to the listening, preservation, and dissemination of Romani musical expressions.

Its approach combines traditional songs, historical contextualization, and critical reflection, treating music not merely as repertoire, but as a language of memory, identity, and cultural transmission.

Integrated with the Baxtale! Archive, the project constitutes a singular ecosystem in Latin America, bringing together performance, documentation, research, and cultural mediation around the musical traditions of Roma communities across Europe.
